Robyn gains Girlguiding’s top accolade

ROBYN Williams, from Douglas, has shown she is leading the way after receiving Girlguiding UK’s top accolade, the coveted Queen’s Guide Award.

The award was presented to Robyn, 26, by Baroness Floella Benjamin and Girlguiding UK’s chief guide Gill Slocombe – herself a Queen’s Guide – at a special ceremony held at the House of Lords in June.

More than 20 young women from around the UK joined Robyn in receiving their Queen’s Guide Award.

The award sees participants take the lead in a number of exciting areas, including developing a personal skill, working within pioneering community action projects and overseeing ambitious outdoor pursuits.

Robyn, who is a Guide Leader and whose Queen’s Guide achievements included sailing on tall ship the Lord Nelson and organising a fundraising event, the ‘Braddan Biblethon’, to raise money for the community, said: ‘Guiding changed my life because it gave me a place where I could try new things and develop leadership skills – and then it gave me the opportunity to help other girls and young women to do the same.’

She added: ‘Completing the award helped to increase my confidence in my own abilities and realise what I can achieve when I put my mind to something like overcoming a fear of heights and the dread of almost certain death by stepping out onto the yard arm of one of the masts on the tall ship Lord Nelson!’
