Peel Castle is natural home for wildlife

VISITORS to Peel Castle discovered the wildlife that’s made its home there with a guided tour.

The event was led by Manx National Heritage curator of natural history Kate Hawkins.

Peel Castle Naturally was the first event offered by MNH and open to the general public looking at the natural history of St Patrick’s Isle.

She said: ‘We walked around the inside of the castle to begin with and looked at plants that grow on the castle walls, the wall tops and in gravelly places.

‘They are ones that have adapted to living on the coast with salt spray to put their roots in.’

They then walked round the path on the outside of the castle, from where they were able to see seals as well as a number of birds, including razorbills, black guillemots and kittiwakes.

Kate also talked about the quarry on the far side of St Patrick’s Isle, where it is presumed most of the stone for the curtain wall of the castle as well as other sections came from.
