Marking the centenary of the First World War

A working group has been set up to help community organisations and public authorities commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War.

Chaired by Manx National Heritage director Edmund Southworth, it is made up of government officers and representatives of the Royal British Legion, Municipal Association and Chamber of Commerce.

It will not directly organise activities or allocate funding, but will provide central co-ordination for commemorations taking place from 2014 to 2018.

The government website will feature a section dedicated to events, including a calendar.

Chief Minister Allan Bell said: ‘The Great War had a dramatic impact on the Isle of Man, not just in the considerable number of lives of Manxmen lost, but also in the profound economic, social and political upheaval experienced over those four years and beyond.’

Anyone planning to stage an event is asked to notify Ann Craine, secretary to the steering group, by email at ann.craine@cso.gov.im or call 685211.
