Join a Global Village on Manx national day

THE One World Centre is inviting local charities working internationally, community groups and individuals who would like to share their country’s heritage to join a Global Village on Tynwald Day.

It will be open from midday until 5pm at Garey Ny Cloie in St John’s.

One World Centre director Rosemary Clarke said: ‘On our national day, when we celebrate Manxness, the One World Centre is providing an opportunity for people who have chosen to make their home here to share something of their background.

‘I’d love to hear from anyone who would like to be part of our Global Village.’

A couple from Sierra Leone will have a stand with information about the country, as will the Filipino Association of the Isle of Man.

Also being represented are ManASVI, a Manx charity working through local charities in the Gwalior region of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, as well as Amnesty International.

Fairtrade tea and coffee will be available and there will also be a chance to pan for gold!

Rosemary said: ‘One of our briefs is to try and help people understand the connections between our lives and the rest of the world and encourage them to think about some of the injustices there are and do something about it. One of the first things we need to recognise is each other and understand a little bit about who we are and the backgrounds we have here.’

She said: ‘It is really an opportunity to see the Isle of Man’s place in the world and celebrate all of us that aren’t actually Manx that are also part of island life. That we can enjoy celebrating the differences we have but also see some of the similarities.’

Rosemary said she hoped the One World Centre would be able to build on the event each year.
