Peel Commissioners hope to put a bronze sculpture of a seal next to the harbour.
The installation would cost £16,000 and would be situated on the Fenella Beach side of the harbour, on the rocks by the slipway near the pedestrian footbridge.
The sculpture would be created by St Mark’s artist Stephanie Quayle.
Stephanie met the commissioners last month to show them her proposal.
In it, she says: ‘Peel has a special affinity with its marine life. A sculpture of the common or harbour seal sunbathing on the rocks would be an iconic symbol of the wildlife habitants of our island and a friendly welcome to visitors, by foot, car and boat alike.
‘A guarantee you’ll get to see a seal on every trip to Peel!’
Stephanie says that the rock location works well for many reasons.
‘It is visually ideal with a high pedestrian vantage point,’ she adds. ‘It has the scenic and iconic backdrop of the beautiful Peel Castle, and also the breakwater, beach and harbour, depending on which way you approach it.
‘People will be able to pose next to the sculpture and hopefully it will help to raise awareness of the rich wildlife to be found in Peel.’
Commissioners’ clerk Peter Leadley said: ‘We will be applying for funding from the Manx Lottery Trust and have also asked Peel Heritage Trust if they would be willing to make a donation.
‘We’ll also be putting something on our Peel Online website appealing for assistance.’
