MHK Peter Karran has written to Peel Commissioners backing them in a row over proposed new sewage works in the town and the beach’s environmental status.

The commissioners and Mr Karran demand that any facility should meet the most recent EU Bathing Directive standards of 2006.

However, minister for the Environment, Phil Gawne, has said that the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) would adhere to the EU 1976 Bathing Water Directive when building new sewage works in Peel.

Commissioner Eric Beale says that he will look into the possibility of displaying warning notices to bathers about the state of the water.

Mr Karran says in his letter: ‘Some members of the House [of Keys] are of the opinion that Peel should receive the cheapest possible method of sewage treatment provision as any option provided will be better than the current situation of pumping all sewage straight into the bay.’

The 2006 directive does not become officially effective until January 2015 but has been used as a guideline for a number of years.

Commissioner Ian Davison said: ‘We want to ensure the best possible sewage treatment system for Peel. What’s the point of building one to old regulations that won’t allow us to achieve blue flag status.’

Mr Gawne said in response: ‘I am confident that any new works will contribute to significantly improving the Peel sea water and beach safety for all users.’
