Regent Street in Douglas was given a bit of colour this week as it was ‘yarn bombed’ by a group of 132 knitting and crochet fans.

‘Yarn bombing’ is a type of graffiti or street art that uses colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre, rather than paint or chalk.

The Manx Yarnies group was formed on Facebook around a year ago by Katy Jeffries.

Katy, from Port St Mary, says: ‘Hopefully it puts a smile on people’s faces. I started the group when I moved to the island about a year ago and I was looking for like-minded people. Towards the end of last year we reached 100 members so we thought we’d try to do something to mark that.

‘We spoke to Michelle O’Malley [Douglas town centre manager], and they were all for the idea.

‘Lorna Trevethan organised the bombing.

‘Michelle has said they’ll leave it all up as long as it’s looking good.

‘We are planning some more “bombings” in the future too.’

You can view or join the ‘Manx Yarnies Unite’ Facebook group by visiting www.facebook.com/groups/ManxYarnies or call Katy on 481342 or Lorna on 453735 for more information.
