Douglas lifeboat was called out on Saturday night to help a fishing vessel with mechanical problems.

The Sir William Hillary was launched at 8.20pm under the command of volunteer deputy second coxswain Graeme Cushnie to go to the aid of a 6.3m fishing vessel with two crew on board just off Port Soderick, south of Douglas.

The vessel’s engine and gearbox mounts had broken, leaving it unable to make any headway.

While the vessel was being taken under tow by the lifeboat a further report was received from a concerned member of the public about two people in a small rubber dinghy in Port Soderick bay.

With the casualty under tow the lifeboat diverted to check on the occupants of the rubber dinghy.

Having confirmed that they were not in need of assistance the lifeboat resumed its tow of the fishing vessel back to Douglas.

The fishing boat was moored at the visitors’ pontoon at the Battery Pier where it was met by Douglas Coastguard.

The lifeboat was re-housed, washed down, re-fuelled and was ready again for service at 9.45pm.
