SURE sponsored Vagabonds sealed a home and away double over Southport, with a comfortable 36-12 win in South Lancashire and Cheshire Division Two at Ballafletcher on Saturday.
Vagas started the brightest, with a tidy lineout followed by a solid drive that allowed hooker Lee Brooks to pop over the try line for the opening score.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it; minutes later the move was almost exactly replicated and this time it was number eight and eventual co-man of the match Franzy Germishuys on the end of the try-scoring move.
The home side kept the pressure on; long-term injured flanker Jamie Cooke was welcomed back with a neat try under the posts, racing home after a pop-pass from captain Leigh Kennaugh. Lock forward Mark Howarth sealed the bonus point by pouncing on a scrappy Southport lineout and barging over the whitewash.
Sitting back in the comfortable armchair that is being 22-0 up inside 20 minutes proved too tempting for Vagabonds and they took their foot off the pedal to allow Southport the bulk of possession for the rest of the half.
The visitors continued their resurgence into the second half and were rewarded with two tries - notable as they came from father and son combination Mark and Matthew Astwood respectively.
The other co-man of the match, Ryan Windell, helped Vagas get back on top with two tries, the pick of which involved the centre gathering his own chip over the flat defence.
