Post boxes removed

The Post Office has removed two post boxes and moved one due to safety concerns.

The decision was made following an annual review and risk assessment of their location.

Post Office chairman Geoff Corkish MLC said: ‘We assess where our post boxes are across the island and whether they are in a dangerous position for our customers to use.

‘This year we paid particular regard to the Coroner’s concerns following the fatal accident which took place in Cronk-y-Voddy, involving a refuse collection vehicle and a biker.

‘As a result, we identified some locations where we have post boxes which are deemed to be in hazardous positions and therefore we have started to take some action to correct this.’

Paul and Helen Flanders, who live on the Main Road in Glen Vine, next to the junction with Glen Darragh Road, complained to the Post Office after the post box on the wall outside their home was removed without warning.

Mr Flanders said: ‘A lot of people used it. It was very handy.’

He was going to start a petition when a sign went up saying it was permanently closed – until he discovered on Wednesday the post box had been removed.

He said he hopes the wall is reinstated soon.

The Post Office said the post box was identified as a ‘particularly unsafe place to stop’ for collecting or posting mail and was ‘hardly ever used’.

It said it had not been replaced as there is an alternative post box on the same side of the road about 200m towards Douglas: ‘This is a far safer location for postal staff to pull in to and collect the mail from.’

Meanwhile, the post box at the former Glenside residential home, in Glencrutchery Road, Douglas, has been removed. The Post Office said there had been ‘a marked reduction in its daily use’ since the home’s closure, and it was also in a ‘potentially hazardous spot’.

The nearest post box is available by Shoprite, Victoria Road.

And the post box outside the former Post Office on the Main Road in Crosby was identified as potentially unsafe. It has been replaced by one on the opposite side of the road next to the bus stop.
