The Three Generations Team is taking part in the Parish Walk to raise money for the Manx Blind Welfare Society.

It will be the first time that Bob Corkish, aged 86, of Ballalough, Castletown, takes part in the event.

He will be joined by his daughter Angie Aire, a finisher of the 85-mile Parish Walk, and grandson Matthew, aged 20.

Bob has been training hard walking between five to 10 miles most days in preparation for his debut.

Angie, of Royal Avenue, Onchan, said: ‘Despite being registered as blind Bob does have some vision and is assisted by the Manx Blind Welfare, so in order to give something back we are raising funds for this worthwhile charity.’

Angie and Bob will be walking together, while Matthew, who is in the under-21s event which finishes at Peel, will walk on ahead.

‘We are just looking to enjoy the atmosphere and are excited to be a part of the Manx Telecom 2013 Parish Walk and of course raise some funds for Manx Blind Welfare,’ she said.

To make a donation call Angie on 498864 or Debbie Kenyon at Manx Blind Welfare on 674274.

Meanwhile, five Standard Bank employees are flying in from South Africa to take part.

They will be raising money for CHOC, a national organisation in South Africa that supports children with cancer.

Colin Townsend and Wendt Saurma-Jeltsch are based in Cape Town while David Pike, David Veale and Ryan Kohler are from the bank’s Johannesburg office

Colin said they were looking forward to the challenge with both excitement and fear: ‘It’s a great way for us to see the Isle of Man in its entirety as well as to benefit CHOC through our efforts. Standard Bank has also committed to matching the amount we raise through sponsorship commitments, so this is a truly worldwide effort from all of our colleagues at Standard Bank.’

All the participants who reach Santon or beyone will receive a medal from sponsor Manx Telecom to mark the event’s 100th anniversary.

The event starts from the NSC track in Douglas at 8am.

Participants wanting to complete the full distance have 24 hours to walk round the island’s 17 parishes, ending on Douglas seafront.

Manx Telecom chief executive Mike Dee, who will start the race, said: ‘The Manx Telecom Parish Walk is a fantastic community and sporting event - but with this year marking 100 years since it began in its current format the 2013 race will be a unique occasion, and we hope to see the majority of those taking part reaching Santon to collect their commemorative medals.

‘Good luck to all of the walkers, and a big thank you to the organising team, volunteers, and supporters who make the Manx Telecom Parish Walk such a wonderful celebration of our island community.’
