The Department of Children and Education’s new boss has been appointed.

Professor Ronald Barr is to become the chief executive officer of the department, which has a workforce of 2,183 deployed across 72 centres, plus more than 500 supply and relief staff.

He will have responsibility for the island’s 38 schools, the Isle of Man College of Further and Higher Education and the education improvement, services for children, corporate services, finance, youth and estates divisions.

A decision will be made in the next few days with regard to a transition plan for his move from his current role of principal at Isle of Man College of Further and Higher Education.

He will succeed Stuart Dobson, who retires at the end of August after a 40-year career in education, eight of them with the department.

Mr Dobson has been chief executive officer since January 2011 and was previously senior adviser and then deputy director of education.
