A group of island army cadets has travelled to Altcar training camp in Liverpool, to compete in a first aid competition.
Two teams of four cadets aged 13 to 16, competed in a number of scenarios, against teams from other cadet forces across the North West of England.
The organising body from 42 North West Brigade and a judging team from the St John Ambulance used casualty simulation ‘make up’ to make the wounded look as real as possible.
The ‘injuries’ ranged from burns on the hands to head injuries.
The cadets from the island pitted their skills they have been taught over the last few months by County First Aid Training Officer Staff Sergeant Wernham, against teams with cadets that have had years of experience in first aid and competitions.
After completing individual and team scenarios, the two Isle of Man teams placed third and fourth overall out of eight army cadet teams, four Combined Cadet Force teams, one sea cadet team and also three young adult teams.
Staff Sergeant Wernham said: ‘After effectively only a few hours’ intense training in the last month, the cadets performed to a high and outstanding level to hold their own against some experienced teams.
‘This is only the second year we have competed at a regional level and have successfully placed in the top three each time.
‘I would like to add, how proud I am of the cadets, with the dedication and hard work they have put into their training and hopefully next year win a place at Sandhurst and represent the North West region.’
The cadets are already looking forward to competing for a place on the teams again next year.
