One hundred years of Southern Show

Preparations for this year’s Southern District Agricultural Show are now under way with plans for extra classes, some diverse entertainments and a variety of demonstration displays.

Planning for the 100th anniversary in 2014 is also now in progress, and it is with this in mind that the committee of the society is asking supporters for help.

The Southern Show has run continuously, with the exception of the war years and the Foot and Mouth outbreak, since 1914, when it was held at Great Meadow, Castletown.

The first show was just weeks before the start of the First World War and the second show was held in 1920. From then on, the Southern District Agricultural Show became a firm fixture in the agricultural and social calendars of many.

The society will be working alongside Manx National Heritage to record both the history and some personal stories of the Show, and will ultimately be producing a commemorative book and calendar to mark the event.

The society would like to see photos, articles, and memorabilia that anyone may have kept hold of, either from exhibiting, volunteering, or visiting the show. This information should be available to be used in the book if possible and might be archived by Manx National Heritage.

If you would wish to have your memorabilia from the Show included in the history of the Southern District Agricultural Show, or have material that you would be willing to have reproduced for the Centennial show and archived with MNH, contact the secretary, Sarah Comish, on 494497 email - {mailto:sdas@manx.net|sdas(at)manx.net}
