Concerns about free WiFi in Peel

CONCERNS have been raised by parents regarding plans to have free WiFi in Peel.

The provision of WiFi for the harbour will allow for free internet access to be provided for an initial period of between 15 and 30 minutes before charges would be incurred.

On a social networking site a couple of parents have said they are worried about the safety of children using the free internet.

The Facebook message stated : ‘I am very concerned about allowing free WiFi in Peel when we as parents have a hard enough time at home protecting our children from the internet.

‘There’s been a lot of bullying on Facebook recently and I do not feel it is appropriate to therefore allow free usage of the internet wherever they go.

‘It worries me so much that what you do in the home doesn’t get supported outside the home and this is exactly what I mean – free WiFi in Peel is giving kids a free rein and I just don’t see it as appropriate or needed.’

Another parent added that ‘free WiFi could be very dangerous’.

Peel commissioner Ray Harmer stated that the free WiFi would allow members of the public to access the commissioners’ website Peel online and other useful websites, not websites such as Facebook unless the user paid for the internet.

‘It is aimed at visitors and tourists. They (children) would have to pay to use it and have a credit card on them. Free internet is quite common, many places like airports have it,’ added Mr Harmer.

It is hoped the service will encourage people into businesses within the town, it will allow visiting boats to check weather forecasts, people to find places to eat, a local taxi or accommodation.

Mr Harmer stated he hoped that the free WiFi would be in use as soon as possible and it is hoped it will be in place before TT.
