A ‘Loom-atic Challenge’ to raise money for Alder Hey Children’s Charity and Ronald McDonald House has stretched beyond all expectation.

Claire Veale came up with the idea to create a giant loom band chain after her son Sidney, aged six, of Scoill yn Jubilee, spent nearly a week at Alder Hey with an infection in his pelvic area earlier this year.

Friends of Scoill yn Jubilee hosted the challenge to create a 370-metre loom band that would reach from the infant site in Stony Road to the junior site in Laureston Avenue.

The chain was unravelle in the infants site playground on Sunday afternoon – where it was discovered that thanks to the fantastic support of everyone involved that the chain was 1,296 metres long and covered 72 widths of the playground!

Claire, who lives in Ballanard Road, Douglas, with husband Mark, said: ‘The chain bypassed the junior site and went the equivalent distance to their secondary school, Ballakermeen.

‘By 3pm we had reached the junior school but they just kept coming!’

The fundraiser raised £1,500, which be split between the two charities.

As well as creating last minute chains on the day, children also enjoyed spending time on the Code Bus.

And they all received a Davison’s ice cream and badge for their efforts.

The chain will now be turned into wall art as a reminder of what they achieved.

Claire thanked the sponsors – Manx Youth Opportunities, LJ Partnership and Cannell Print. Refreshments were donated by Robinsons and The Co-operative.
