CELEBRATE Hunt the Wren tomorow (Boxing Day) at a range of events around the Isle of Man.
Wherever you are in the island, there is plenty of opportunity to enjoy the music, dancing and cheer of the Manx tradition.
People of all ages are welcome to join Maughold Social Club and Ramsey Heritage Trust at 10.30am outside St Paul’s Church, Market Square, Ramsey.
There will be singing, dancing and playing around the town, ending with seasonal refreshments at Quayle’s Hall in Ramsey at 11.30am.
In Douglas, members of the public are invited to meet outside the Woodbourne Hotel, Alexander Drive, while the St John’s group will meet at the Arboretum car park. These events both start at 10.30am.
In Port St Mary, you are invited to meet at 10am at the Golf Pavilion for wren pole judging. Dancers and musicians will then start moving around the village at 10.30am, ending at The Albert.
According to Margaret Killip in her book The Folklore of the Isle of Man: ‘One theorist, convinced of its antiquity, suggests that “the wren cult reached the British Isles during the Bronze Age and was carried by the Megalith builders” which, if it could be proved, would make it possibly the oldest surviving custom in existence.’
