A serving prisoner who attacked a guard with a home -made knife is now facing an even longer prison sentence.

Christopher Kevin McClusky spent two days fabricating the knife using razor blades specifically to carry out his revenge attack.

The Deputy High Bailiff heard 33-year-old McClusky carried out the vindictive attack after the guard had prevented him from hugging his family at the end of visiting time.

McClusky, who was jailed in 2013, admitted a charge of affray in relation to the September 9 incident.

For the prosecution, Mary Kelly said the defendant was being escorted into a segregation wing cell by two guards when he launched the attack.

‘The prison officer spoke to him, and he became argumentative and lunged towards him brandishing what seemed to be an improvised bladed weapon,’ she said.

The guard fled from the cell pursued by the defendant, who ignored repeated instructions to put the knife down, she said.

McClusky was finally subdued and put back in the cell after the guards drew batons and reinforcements arrived.

Mrs Kelly told the court: ‘The defendant had been visited by family and friends and when he tried to hug them he had been stopped by prison officers and frog-marched down to the cells, so he had planned to take revenge.

‘He had designed the knife with razor blades placed 5mm apart and he had kept it concealed inside a book in his cell.’

The court heard McClusky had intended to injure the prison guard.

When the guard did not sit down, as he had expected, he lunged at him with the knife, narrowly missing.

After the attack, he said he had no remorse and would do it again if the chance arose, Mrs Kelly said.

The weapon appeard to be a plastic knife with razor blades melted into the tip, she added.

Even before the attack, the defendant was not due for parole until 2020, the court heard.

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes noted the attack was planned and the defendant had spent two days making the knife. She said he had intended to do more harm than had resulted.

Consequently she said her sentencing powers (of up to six months’ imprisonment) were not sufficient. He was committed to the Court of General Gaol Delivery for sentencing and will appear on March 4.
