A presentation the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancers takes place on Monday at Douglas gold club.

Surgeon Giovanni Tebala, will be the guest speaker for this month’s Meet the Consultant Evening organised by the Isle of Man Cancer Service Users’ Forum.

Mr Tebala trained in Rome at the Aurelia Hospital where he was in charge of digestive and endoscopic surgery. He took up a post at Noble’s hospital in 2013 and last year became clinical director of the division of general and specialist surgery.

His talk on Monday evening focuses on colorectal surgery and he will explain to listeners the course of treatment for those diagnosed with colorectal cancers.

He will also talk about the new £1.9 million endoscopy unit which has just been completed at the hospital and is expected to open in March. More than 3,500 endoscopies are performed each year at the hospital. The process, using miniature cameras to examine the inside of the body, is increasingly used for diagnosis and treatment.

Vice chairman of the Cancer Service Users’ Forum Julie Stokes said: ‘The new endoscopy unit will enhance privacy and dignity for patients and is a purpose built facility.’

The presentation is at Douglas golf club on Monday February 29 and runs from 7.30pm to 9pm. Admission is free and parking is available.

The next Meet the Consultant Evening is in April and will feature Stephen Upsdell, consultant urologist at Noble’s hospital. His presentation will be on prostate cancer and other cancers of the urinary tract.

Anyone wanting more information can contact Mrs Stokes on 484950.
