CHRISTMAS has come to Douglas as the capital’s lights were switched on for the festive period on Thursday night.
Among the attractions is a continental market, which is taking place along the length of the main shopping street from Castle Street to Duke Street.
It will be on until Thursday.
While that’s been welcomed by many, there has been a voice of dissent.
Ian Davison, owner of The Chocolate Box, in Regent Street, said it was ‘absolutely ridiculous’ three market stalls were allowed to set up right outside his shop.
‘They are going to significantly affect my business,’ he said.
He said profits were about 40 per cent down on previous years due to the economic climate and the weather, and that it was the worst year he had seen in his 30 years of business.
Mre Davison he had no problem with the market traders being in Douglas, but suggested the Villa Marina gardens and the promenade as better locations.
Late-night shopping in the town will continue on Thursdays until Christmas and free parking will be available in the Shaw’s Brow and Bottleneck car parks.
Free parking is also available on designated sections of Douglas promenade’s walkway from 9.30am till 9pm.
