Liberal Vannin candidates get seats without elections

Two Liberal Vannin candidates are to become councillors in Douglas after they were the only ones to put their names forward for two by-elections.

Cat Turner and Claire Wells have been returned unopposed in Victoria Ward and Murrays Ward respectively.

This brings the total of LibVan local authority members to five, with Pat Ayres and Lawrie Hooper already in post in Ramsey and Andrew Jessop in Braddan.

Mr Ayres got his seat in Ramsey last week after he was the only candidate to step forward.

The vacancies arose after Bill Malarkey left the council to become an MHK again and Cllr Jon Joughin was forced to resign because it turned out he wasn’t on the electoral roll.

LibVan leader Kate Beecroft said: ‘I am delighted that we now have more representation at local level.

‘The party can only go from strength to strength as people see the benefit of having members that are available in public every month.

‘Our meetings are open to anyone and all are welcome.

‘Of course, there are still the usual contact routes of telephone call, emails etc but it is quite unusual on the island for politicians, both local and national, to be present for debate and questioning by the public every month.’
