Another candidate has announced he will be standing in the forthcoming Glenfaba by-election.

German commissioner Geoffrey Boot is to challenge for the seat.

He polled just 92 fewer votes than the winnner, David Anderson, in the general election in 2011.

He also stood unsuccessfully for the seat in 2006.

Mr Anderson’s move to the Legislative Council means there is a vacancy in the House of Keys for the seat, which includes Patrick, Foxdale and St John’s.

Geoffrey has lived on the outskirts of St John’s for nearly 30 years.

In a statement he says: ‘One of the big criticisms of some MHKs is their lack of business and political experience on and off island.

‘Geoffrey’s business career spans a wide range of interests building a number of fledgling businesses in property, leisure, publishing, surveying and aviation into substantial entities.

‘He has held a number of senior board positions and been involved in negotiation, regulation and legislation nationally within the UK, Europe and Internationally.

‘Whilst many of these interests are still current he makes it clear that if elected his primary job will be that of an MHK.’

His statement adds: ‘Geoffrey is also well known for his air racing and aviation exploits. He is a commercial pilot and currently holds 24 aviation world records and racing with his navigator wife Suzie has won many prestigious trophies and championships, including the British Air Racing Championship, European Championship and locally the Manx Air Derby and Tynwald Trophies.’

The statement, written in the third person, adds: ‘He is realistic about what can be achieved in what will be a term of around 12 months but hopes that his business and political experience both on and off island will add value to Tynwald.

‘He strongly believes in listening to the electorate and good communications, endeavouring to adopt a consensus wherever possible but understands the need to make hard decisions on occasions, particularly in the prevailing economic climate.’

So far, one other candidate has come forward in the Glenfaba constituency.

He is accountant David Talbot.
