ONE of the policewomen killed in Greater Manchester today came from the Isle of Man.
Constable Fiona Bone, aged 32, grew up in the island.
Her family live in Port St Mary and she went to Castle Rushen High School.
She was unarmed as she and a colleague, Constable Nicola Hughes, aged 23, were killed in a gun and grenade attack.
They were investigating an alleged burglary in Mottram, Tameside.
A 29-year-old man, Dale Cregan, has been arrested in connection with the officers’ deaths and two previous alleged murders.
Cregan walked into nearby Hyde police station shortly after the incident and was arrested.
Witnesses reported hearing 13 gunshots and an explosion shortly after 11am today (Tuesday).
Peter Fahy, the chief constable in Greater Manchester, said Constable Bone was a ‘calm, gentle woman’and an ‘excellent bobby’.
‘We are devastated by this loss and our thoughts and condolences go out to these two officers, their friends and in particularly their colleagues who work with them day in, day out, who are shocked and distressed at the events this morning,’ he told reporters.
Police said one of the officers died at the scene. The other died soon afterwards.
UK Prime Minister David Cameron said: ‘This was an absolutely dispicable act of pure evil.’
Reports tonight say that Constable Bone had been planning her wedding.
Her family are being supported by police welfare officers.
