Peel Cathedral’s head chorister Peter Boussougou was installed as a chorister bishop at a special ceremony at the cathedral at the weekend.

The move is a revival of a Viking tradition and Peter will serve in the post for just 22 days.

During that time, as the first chorister bishop in modern times, he will take part in other services at the Cathedral over the Christmas period.

His duties will include leading the prayers, distributing presents to the children and blessing the congregation.

As part of the ceremony, he was given a pastoral staff, dressed in Bishop’s regalia and installed in the bishop’s throne.

He will serve in the role between December 6 and December 28. During the service to install Peter in his role, young church members told the story of St Nicholas and his connection with the island.

There was also a special performance by children in the Grace Notes choir from Peel Clothworkers’ school and an anthem was sung by the Cathedral choir too. The service, on Saturday was open to children and ended with a Christmas tea after the service.

A church spokesman said the service was an acknowledgement of the important part that music and the Cathedral choir play in the life of the cathedral and its aim to put children first.
