Douglas Rotary was at the centre of a range of events designed to mark World Polio Day last week.

On Wednesday Douglas Rotary held a meal at Mount Murray attended by members and friends of the club.

On display there were two iron lungs loaned from Noble’s Hospital which were used in the island to keep people alive if they were suffering paralysis as a result of polio.

In addition the new kit to be worn by the Ellan Vannin football team was also unveiled with away shirts in the campaign colour of purple and the home shirts bearing the End Polio Now logo.

Kevin Kneen of Douglas Rotary Club said: ‘We believe this is the first time that any international football team has allowed its match shirts to be used to promote awareness of a campaign such as End Polio Now.’

Over the weekend the campaign was also promoted with special purple illumination on the Tower of Refuge in Douglas Bay and the Tynwald building in the centre of the capital.

The Rotary Club world wide is pursuing the campaign with the support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Since the start of the campaign, Douglas Rotary Club has raised £30,000.
