They must boast one of the most dramatic locations in the island.

Now the Langness Lighthouse Cottages including the former holiday home of Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson have been relaunched by his estranged wife Francie Cain.

Herring Cottage, which sleeps six, has been added to the list of cottages that can be rented out to holidaymakers.

And it is hoped that the lighthouse itself will become a wedding venue too. The lighthouse was built in 1880 by David and Thomas Stevenson.

Francie’s aim is to have the three cottages occupied not just in the summer season but all year round, and for special events and occasions too.

Fen Collister has taken over the management of the cottages.

She has been friends with Francie since the early 1970s when they attended the Buchan School and King William’s College together, as well as living only a few doors apart in Castletown as children.

‘When we were young we would spend school holidays riding the horses or bikes out to Langness, which was her favourite place and somewhere she always said she wanted to live,’ Fen said.

A Facebook page ‘Langness Lighthouse Cottages’ has been launched with details of Herring Cottage as well as East and West Cottages, which both sleep four. And since then it has received interest from around the world.

The cottages are also on Britain’s Finest website.

Fen said: ‘I am so glad that Francie is the guardian out here. While she owns it it will be kept unspoilt as the stunning place it is, and always has been, for all to enjoy. I always think, thank goodness it is in a fellow Manx patriot’s hands and not a developer’s.’

Over the summer they watched whales, dolphins, porpoises and basking sharks swim past from the cottages.

And the pair are keen to ensure that people visiting the peninsula – designated as an Area of Special Scientific Interest, notably for its wetland birds and saltmarshes – don’t cause any damage. It is also an important site for breeding birds, and the only recorded habitat in the British Isles of the lesser mottled grasshoper.

Fen said: ‘We have been very concerned about people riding bicycles over the footpaths and heathland because we are aware of the damage that can be done. There should be absolutely no vehicles travelling on the footpaths. Some people have even lit fires and barbecues near the jetty.’

In 2012 the Clarksons lost a legal battle forcing them to restore a section of coastal footpath around their holiday home which they had re-routed to protect their privacy.
