Peel ponders staging soap box derby

Peel Commissioners are looking into holding a Soap Box Derby in the town.

Last month Douglas had held its first ever soap box race, which attracted 26 competitors and raised entry fees of £1,500.

The event saw competitors compete in their home-made, non-motorised soap box vehicles in a downhill race to become the ultimate champion.

The Douglas course started from Upper Church Street and went downhill to Barrack Street, going past four pubs, Bar George, The Courthouse, The Rover’s Return and The Outback along the route.

Now Peel man Kevin Oliver has written to the commissioners suggesting that Peel has its own race.

In a letter to the commissioners discussed at their latest board meeting, Mr Oliver says: ‘We have plenty of hills in and around Peel to stage the event.

‘Would advice be available from Douglas or Port Erin where they have already held the event?

‘There has been some interest at the QEII school, though the teachers are very busy and building a cart or two would be extra curricular.

‘The commissioners would be able to organise an exciting day like this, that I feel sure would draw a good crowd, as well as keeping lots of soapbox cart designers happy for a few months over the winter.’

The commissioners are in favour of the idea if an appropriate location could be found.

Ian Davison said: ‘I think it’s a good idea, it is just a question of where we could do it with minimum disruption to the town.’

Places suggested included from Shoprite to Market Square, Glenfaba, Patrick Street, Station Road and the path running down the headlands.
