Granting a new licence to Wi-Manx would increase competition and choice of services consumers and businesses, says the Communications Commission.
The telecommunications provider is hoping to expand its services placing it on an equal footing with the island’s other two main providers, Manx Telecom and Sure.
An application has been made by Wi-Manx to the Communications Commission to modify its communications licence. If granted, the modification would see the licence upgraded from an ISP (internet service provider’s) licence which allows it to offer internet-related services. The upgrade would provide it with a Full Operator licence allowing it to offer voice services and more business services.
Yoav Harel of the Communications Commission said the upgraded licence would mean Wi-Manx could provide more services related to fixed line calling, because it was the same type of licence as that held by Manx Telecom and Sure. A statement from the Communications Commission said the move would increase competition and choice of services for consumers and businesses.
The Communications Commission has given a one month notice period, from October 3, of its intention to modify the Wi-Manx licence, after considering a business plan and financial statements.
During the one-month period interested parties can express their views on the proposed licence modification to the Communications Commission. More details can be found on the commission’s web site at www.iomcc.im
