A diver and team of engineers from Manx Utilities used specialist CCTV equipment to examine the sewage outflow system in Peel on Tuesday.
They assessed the condition of the existing infrastructure as part of an ongoing feasibility study into improvements in sewage treatment.
Peel is one of five sites around the island’s coastline that still pumps raw sewage into the sea.
Three of these outlets, at Peel, Laxey and Baldrine, will not be improved during the current phase of the government’s Regional Sewage Treatment Strategy (RSTS).
Any upgrades to these sites will take place as part of phase two of the RSTS, scheduled to take place between 2016 and 2021, but no funding has yet been approved by Tynwald.
Earlier this year, Peel was one of three of the island’s beaches that failed to meet minimum water quality standards set down by the 1976 EU Bathing Directive.
Along with Kirk Michael and Ramsey beaches, it was given a ‘fail’ grade in the Marine Conservation Society’s 2014 Good Beach Guide.
