More than 1,000 riders are expected to take part in a tribute motorcycle ride for TT racer and Honda Legends rider Simon Andrews, setting out from the TT Grandstand on Glencrutchery Road on Sunday afternoon.

The venture started on the social media website Facebook after the rider, who made his TT debut in 2011, died following a racing accident at the North West 200 road races in Ireland in May.

Organisers hope to have a minute’s noise with bike engines being revved in tribute before setting off for the trip at 2.30pm.

Notice of the event has received more than 8,000 official ‘likes’ on Facebook.

Riders on the lap will head north to Ramsey and from that point will have the option of either heading back over the mountain road or via the Laxey coast road to avoid the Mad Sunday traffic on the TT course.

The 29-year-old from Evesham in Gloucestershire crashed approaching Metropole corner on the fourth lap of the Superstock race on Saturday. May 17, but died two days later in the intensive care unit of Belfast’s Royal Victoria hospital.

He had been part of the Honda Legends racing team alongside Morcambe rider John McGuinness, as well as competing in the British Superbikes series, and was due to have raced at this year’s TT.

Simon’s father Stuart told his local paper, the Evesham Observer, his son had loved road racing and had made his debut at the North West 200 in 2011.

Commemorative T-shirts will be on sale at the Hailwood centre at the Grandstand from 1pm on Sunday.

Organisers also hope to offer them afterwards by mail order and proceeds will be donated to a charity nominated by Simon’s family.
