AROUND TWO thousand people put on their wellies to take part in a walk to the Tower of Refuge on Saturday.
The tower, built on Conister Rock in Douglas in 1832, was the idea of Sir William Hillary, founder of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the walk was arranged in aid of the charity.
Despite the drizzly weather, people of all ages took part.
During the walk the Mayor of Douglas councillor Ritchie McNicholl was treated to a trip inside the tower, which was closed to the general public due to ongoing maintenance. He said: ‘It was amazing, I had never been before so it was all new to me. Even though I’m Manx born and bred I had never set foot on the Conister Rock in my life. It was brilliant all the people who were out there, apparently there were 2,000 and it was all for a good cause.
‘Despite the weather people seemed to be enjoying themselves. It was a privilege to go inside.’
