A YOUNG cyclist aims to ride 150 miles this Easter holiday to raise money for three island charities.
Cameron Hawes, who is just seven, is a keen cyclist, and plans to cover the miles in stages by Tuesday on his road and mountain bikes.
Last year, when aged only six, he completed 100 charity miles – so his aim is to better that.
His mother, Rosie Hawes, said; ‘He loves cycling and he loves rugby, too, so he keeps me busy. He did two laps of Archallagan on Saturday as part of the challenge and he’ll end with 12 laps of the NSC on Tuesday to make up the miles to 150.’
In order to clock up the miles, Cameron will be using both his road bike and his mountain bike in a series of rides in various locations around the island. He has also received sponsorship from estate agents Black Grace Cowley, who supplied cycling tops, and he is going to see how many of their For Sale signs he can spot along the route.
Cameron’s target is to raise at least £900 to share between the Vagabonds’ Youth Rugby team, the St John Ambulance cadets and Badgers and his own school in Kirk Michael, as well as Ghamrang village school in Nepal, with which his school is twinned.
As well as being a member of the Team Royal London 360 cycling league, the Manx Mountain bike club and BMX Isle of Man, Cameron has also been a member of the Vagabonds Rugby Club since he was four.
‘He plays tag rugby at the moment but will be moving up to contact rugby soon,’ his mother said.
‘Cameron loves being a member of St John Ambulance and learning first aid. He has also carried the Badger standard at lots of parades like Tynwald Day and Remembrance Sunday.’
Last year Cameron rode 100 miles during his Easter holidays and raised £1,140 for three local charities.
Cameron’s efforts will be updated on a Facebook group – Cameron’s 150-mile charity cycle – which has been set up for him.
