The Point of Ayre road is closed while firefighters tackle a blazing gas cylinder at the quarry.
A spokesman for the fire brigade said an acetyline cylinder - which was equipment being used at the quarry - was alight and a 200 metre safety cordon had been placed around it in case it exploded.
The cordon will have to remain in place for 24 hours after the cylinder stops burning to allow it to cool down.
Assistant divisional officer Geoff Quayle said: ‘The danger period is 24 hours after it being exposed to flames.
‘We are not sure what happened to cause the incident but we are working with the Health and Safety Inspectorate to find the cause.’
Because the gas is highly inflammable, he said the best strategy was to allow it to burn out rather than extinguish it and allow a cloud of volatile gas to escape. People such as dog walkers are being asked to avoid the area.
There are two residential properties in the area, one being the lighthouse, that are only accessible through the cordon, though the houses themselves are outside the danger zone.
‘We have contaced one resident but are still trying to get in touch with the other,’ Mr Quayle said.
‘We are trying to cause as little disruption for residents as possible.’
The cordon is likely to be in place for at least 24 hours and updates will be posted on the fire service Twitter feed.
