The best turned out units on parade at the 2012 and 2013 Tynwald Day ceremonies have been recognised by Tynwald.

For 2012 the Isle of Man Prison Service received the accolade and a donation of £50 to their nominated charity, the ManxSPCA, while the 2013 award went to the Isle of Man Army Cadet Force, together with a donation of £50.

Prison officer Shirley Faragher said: ‘It is a great honour to be part of the pageantry and ceremony of Tynwald Day, one of the rare occasions now when we can wear the baratheas as we refer to our dress uniform.

‘We were therefore extremely proud to have been recognised by Tynwald in this way and also to be able to support a local Manx charity with this donation.’

Major Dean Johnson , representing the Army Cadet Force said: ‘Tynwald Day - the ceremony, the parade, the formal proceedings and the many attractions - sums up much of what the Isle of Man is all about. It is a privilege to take part in such a time-honoured event.’

The donation will help fund camps and other activities.

Presenting the awards, Tynwald President Clare Christian said: ‘I congratulate both units on their achievement and, on behalf of Tynwald, extend my thanks to them for adding to the sense of occasion and tradition that distinguishes our national day.’ (Picture: Paul Dougherty)
