KWC students excel in exams

Sixth formers at King William’s College have celebrated after their International Baccalaureate exam results were published.

The average points score of 33.6 makes it the third best set of results since the College introduced the IB back in 2002.

This is equivalent to more than three A*s at A-level according to the UCAS tariff.

Eighty-two per cent of all grades were at Level 5 or above, the equivalent to A*-B at A-level.

Six candidates achieved 40 points or more, which puts them in the top 7 per cent of IB students worldwide.

Daria Holdenried-Chernoff gained 44 points, only one point off the maximum of 45.

She will now read natural sciences at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge.

Zlatina Dobreva also met her offer for natural sciences at Cambridge this time at Queens’ College. And Peter Currie will be studying medicine at Queen’s University, Belfast.

Jonathan Chan’s achievement of 40 points secured his place at the University of British Columbia.

As well as his sixth form studies, he also competed successfully in snowboarding world championships.

Joss Buchanan, the vice principal - academic at the college, said: ‘The great strength of the IB is its breadth – the requirement to study six subjects – and the students have done spectacularly well across the board from the languages to the sciences and from maths to the arts.

‘It is a fantastic education and it is no surprise that more than ever before universities are going out of their way to recruit IB students.

‘We are delighted that this year group has done so well and we are confident that the IB has given them the skills and knowledge to now go on and excel at university.’

Martin Humphreys, the principal, said: ‘Last September we had a dinner to celebrate the first 10 years of the IB at College and it was a real pleasure to witness the international outlook of our alumni who are building careers all over the world.

‘This year’s results are a wonderful academic achievement but education extends beyond the classroom and I am also very proud of what these students have achieved in music, drama, art and sports during their time here.’
