The man pretending to work for Douglas Council has been going around houses in the Saddlestone estate claiming to be conducting a survey of electrical installations.
The police and the council have issued a warning about him.
A joint statement reads: ‘The council understands the individual is advising householders their safety could be at risk, as that their consumer unit, which controls their electrical installation, is not in compliance with the Institute of Engineering Technology’s 17th edition wiring regulations and is therefore unsafe and will require changing.
‘Douglas Council wishes to make it clear that it has not commissioned such a survey and that the claim to act on behalf of the council is fraudulent.
‘The council is taking every step to ensure its good name and reputation are not being compromised and advises householders to always to ask for proof of identity from any such “cold callers” and to report such bogus calls to the police.’
A police spokesman said: ‘If you are in any doubt as to the identity of a caller or whether they are genuine please err on the side of caution and confirm with the body that they purport to represent. Always ask for identification and if in any doubt do not allow strangers into your home.’
