Relay for Life organising committee members and supporters spread the message ‘fight back and kiss goodbye to cancer’ on a tour of the Isle of Man on Saturday.
The organising committee, chaired and assisted by Nicola Walkingshaw and Debbie Pitts of Dot’s Dream Foundation, were joined on the open top bus by some of the teams that have already signed up to the 24-hour non-competitive walking relay, taking place at the NSC on August 23.
Dressed as superheroes, they left a purple trail of ‘kisses’ and other temporary tattoos on willing supporters and put up posters and leaflets in shops and businesses.
The bus left Douglas at 9.30am and met steam trains arriving in Castletown and Port Erin, before heading to Peel via Tynwald Hill.
A mini relay race was held in Castletown Square, and an hour long continuous children’s relay which proved popular for children queuing up for balloons and facepainting.
The bus received lots of visitors in Peel and Ramsey before stopping at Laxey Wheel. Leaflets were left in Laxey and Onchan, before returning to Douglas, where the Tower of Refuge was lit up purple.
Nicola said: ‘We’ve had interest and registration from four new teams which is great news.
‘We’re now over half way to our target number of teams.
‘We raised just over £600 [for Cancer Research UK] from donations and bag packing which our Dot’s Dream Team did in Peel Shoprite.’
