Residents are being urged to help reclaim the island’s world record for the largest three-legged race.
The Guinness Book of World Records-monitored attempt, part of a family fun day, takes place on Douglas beach on Monday.
More than 300 pairs have already signed up but more than 551 pairs are needed to beat the current record, set by Morecambe Community High School in Lancashire last year.
Lee McLellan, business development director at Home Strategic, a member of the organising committee, said: ‘We want to well and truly trounce that record on what promises to be a fun day for the whole family on Douglas Promenade and beach.
‘With the Triskellion three legs being our national emblem it’s all about bringing the record back to its rightful home, along with the kudos that goes with it.’
The island held the record in 2009 when 468 pairs finished the required 200 metre race, but lost it to a school in Japan in 2011.
Everyone has to be running for the record to stand.
Mr McLellan added: ‘We are confident the Isle of Man will pull together, come the day, come the hour, to ensure this world record comes back to where it rightfully belongs.’
The race starts at 2pm, and fancy dress is optional.
Entrants must be aged seven and over, and those aged 15 and under must be paired with someone 16 and above.
A separate under 7s Manx record attempt (no pre-registration required) takes place at 1pm.
There will be a range of activites for all the family on the Onchan end of the beach from 11am to 5pm.
They include a giant water slide, slack lines (similar to tight rope walking), a paddling pool, chalk painting, face painting and sandcastle building.
Chillerz will be playing an eclectic mix of covers from midday-1.30pm, followed by traditional Manx dancers Ny Fennee, accompanied by Tarroo Marroo Ceili Band until 2pm. Then indie rock 3 Million will perform from 3.30pm-5pm.
It costs £5 per pair to register for the race and all proceeds will go to The Children’s Centre.
Susie Cox of The Children’s Centre said: ‘We are absolutely delighted to have been chosen as the charity associated with the race.
‘All the money raised will go to projects which are in the pipeline and will benefit children from across the island.’
