Lifeboat gets stuck while helping with clean-up

Port Erin Lifeboat made an unscheduled stop at Spaldrick Beach on Monday evening.

A spokesman explained they had been picking up rubbish collected by the Beach Buddies from the Port Erin beach when their vessel, Muriel and Leslie, got stuck.

The crew had to wait for the tide to come in before they could set off again.

‘It wasn’t planned, but hey ho,’ the spokesman said.

Bill Dale of Beach Buddies said 34 volunteers, including 1st Rushen Scouts, collected 25 bags of rubbish from the beach, some of which he thought was up to 20 years old.

‘I don’t think the beach had ever been properly cleaned before,’ Bill said.

He thanked the crew for their support, saying it made a big difference not having to carry the rubbish back up the steep steps. PICTURE FROM READER MARY DAVIES
