BEACH Buddies will take on a big task on Sunday when volunteers tackle a large amount of rubbish which has gathered on the beach at Spaldrick in Port Erin.

A previous attempt to clear the beach was abandoned in stormy weather conditions, but the forecast for today (Sunday), although not perfect, means that Port Erin Lifeboat will be able to assist the volunteers in removing bags of rubbish from the beach.

‘This will be a big help for us,’ said Bill Dale of Beach Buddies.

‘It’s a very steep footpath to Spaldrick and it would have been a massive job carrying dozens of heavy bags of rubbish back up from the beach.

‘We are very grateful to Port Erin Lifeboat for their support,. and our volunteers are looking forward to cleaning Spaldrick beach for the first time in many years.

‘Having already inspected the beach, it’s obvious that some of the items of rubbish have been there for some considerable time. It will be a big job, but we are confident of leaving it in perfect condition afterwards.’

The session starts at 10.30am and lasts for around 90 minutes. Beach Buddies provides litterpickers, gloves and rubbish bags and will dispose of the rubbish afterwards, recycling where possible.

Directions: Spaldrick is the beach just below Bradda Glen Cafe.

Access is from two points - either from the Bradda Glen Cafe side, down a twisting footpath, or down a similar zig-zag path from the opposite (promenade) side. Parking is either at the glen or on the road above the promenade path which loops round a block of houses just off the Upper Promenade. The access to this point is via a road almost opposite the road leading to Rowany Golf Club.
