ELEVEN landlords have so far voluntarily signed up to be registered. the Social Care Minister confirmed in Tynwald.
The Landlord and Tenants (Private Housing) Bill 2013 will make it illegal to operate as a landlord unless they are registered and meet a set of minimum standards.
A voluntary Landlord Registration Scheme was launched in February as a pilot for the scheme that will become mandatory under the new legislation.
The move aims to drive up basic minimum standards in the island’s private rented accommodation.
Social Care Minister Chris Robertshaw told Tynwald that there 7,000 private sector properties of which it is estimated that between 3 and 4 per cent are deemed not fit for human habitation.
He said: ‘Since the introduction a few weeks ago, a total of 11 landlords have voluntarily submitted an application to be registered and subsequently been accepted on to the list of registered landlords.’
Mr Robertshaw has admitted he is ‘surprised’ by the level of concerns shown by landlords against the bill.
David Quirk (Onchan) suggested: ‘Why not talk with the landlords themselves?’
