KING William’s College teachers Rebekah Pate and Clare Ledger are taking on the challenge of the London Marathon on April 22 this year.

They are in training to complete the 26.2 miles for Get Kids Going!

The charity helps disabled children and young people by providing them with personalised sports wheelchairs, lightweight manual wheelchairs and sports grants so they are able to participate in all kinds of different sports.

More than 200,000 disabled children and young people in Britain and the Isle of Man need the help of the charity.

It receives no state funding and yet a further 20,000 disabled children need sports wheelchairs so they can compete in summer and winter sports such as marathons, rugby, athletics, tennis, skiing and many more. The average cost of a sports grant ranges from £500 upwards. A sports wheelchair costs about £4,000.

Get Kids Going! provides disabled youngsters with equipment and it gives them an interest and helps them to take part in sport. It also helps with sports therapists, sports training, physiotherapy, travel to sporting events and design of sports wheelchairs with the aim of helping British children and young people become world and Paralympics champions.

The charity’s president is Lord Coe.

Rebekah and Clare have pledged to raise as much as they can for the charity. Their minimum target is £4,000 – the same cost as a specialist wheelchair.

Rebekah said: ‘We and the charity would be most grateful if you could help turn dreams into reality for disabled children and youngsters by giving a donation. It doesn’t matter how large or small, even a raffle prize would be gratefully received.’

Clare said: ‘For my sins and for not to letting a friend down, I am running the London Marathon. Maybe I’m mad or stupid I don’t know. But on April 22 I will be running/walking/dragging myself over the 26.2 mile finish line.

‘Now this isn’t for fun, it’s for a reason. I am running for Get Kids Going! I hope you may be kind enough to donate whatever you can afford. It takes a couple of minutes and is very easy. Absolutely every little bit helps,’
