FORTY new car parking spaces could be made available in Douglas, if the Department of Infrastructure’s plan is approved.
The department has applied for planning approval (13/00133/B) to build a second level of parking on top of the existing car park at The Tongue, in Douglas inner harbour.
In addition, alterations would be made to the layout of the existing car park.
In the application it states that it is proposed the whole site would be operated on a pay and display basis.
Separate access is planned for each level of the car park.
The upper level would be accessed direct from Bridge Road.
While the lower level would be accessed from the Tongue ramp up to Bridge Road.
A flood risk assessment by Curtins Consulting Ltd is included as part of the application.
It says that Isle of Man Flood maps indicate the site is in a high risk flood zone, with the last known flood there taking place in February 2002.
To manage the risk it says ‘the Department of Infrastructure will operate the car park and implement monitoring of potential flooding events of the lower level, with electronic signage provided to advise of closure of the lower car park level at times of potential flooding’.
The site would measure 45 metres by 16 metres, with an approximate plan area of 900 square metres of parking per level.
At present, the concrete car park has an area of 1,025 square metres.
