PEOPLE are being urged to make a bat box with the Manx Bat Group this weekend.

The group is holding its annual workshop at Eden Park Garden Centre, Cooil Road, Braddan, on Saturday, from 1.30pm.

The event takes place during National Nest Box Week, a similar initiative for birds usually held in the week in which Valentine’s Day falls.

It is an appropriate time of year to erect bird and bat boxes in readiness for the coming breeding season.

At the workshop, members of the Manx Bat Group will be present to show participants how to make and where to site a bat roost box to help encourage our local bats.

Wood and tools will be supplied, and you will have the option to buy your bat box or to leave it with the group to put up in a suitable location.

Completed boxes will be available for purchase for the public to erect on their own property.

The group believes artificial bat boxes can play an important part in bat survival when many natural sites have been lost.

People under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

The Manx Bat Group, a charity, brings together volunteers interested in the conservation of Manx bats. It is affiliated to the Bat Conservation Trust.
