Health and Social Care Minister Howard Quayle has announced his intention of seeking re-election in September’s House of Keys general election.

Other candidates who have announced they are standing in Middle are former senior education adviser and local commissioner Paul Craine, and Isle of Man Bank managing director Bill Shimmins.

Due to the boundary and electoral changes, Middle will now send two members to the House of Keys, with the constituency incorporating Santon.

Mr Quayle, who topped the poll in Middle in the 2011 general election, has been Health and Social Care Minister for the past two years. Before that he was chairman of the planning committee and Manx Electricity Authority.

He said: ‘The government will be facing some major challenges in the next five years but if we can overcome them - and overcome them we must - then the Isle of Man will be on a really secure footing. At such an important time, we need MHKs with political experience and vision to reduce expenditure and grow the economy.’

Mr Quayle says the four main challenges are managing the public sector pension liability, balancing public finances. responding to attacks on offshore finance centres and continuing to fund high quality health and social care.

He is married to Lorraine. They have three children and live at Ballavitchel Lodge, Ballavitchel Road, Crosby.
