Warning after fires

FIREFIGHTERS have issued a warning after being called to two separate kitchen fires in Castletown.

The first happened in a propoerty in Ballanorris Corner.

They were called out just before midnight on Friday. Although the fire was out when they got there, the elderly resident was suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

The second took place almost 24 hours later at a property in Smetna Close.

Again, the fire had been put out before they got there and again the elderly resident was suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

A fire service spokesman said: ‘There are several things you can do to prevent fires in the kitchen. Make sure you don’t get distracted when you are cooking, and take pans off the heat or turn the heat down if you’re called away from the cooker, eg by a phone call.

‘Take care if you’re wearing loose clothing as it can catch fire easily.

‘D’t cook if you have been drinking alcohol or taken prescription drugs - you may get drowsy or lose concentration.’
