Economic crime will come under the magnifying glass at a seminar tonight (Monday) being hosted by PwC Isle of Man.

‘Adjusting the lens on Economic Crime’ takes place at the Manx Museum Lecture Theatre, Douglas at 5pm with registration from 4.30pm.

The seminar will focus on the trends and leading observations from PwC’s biennial Global Economic Crime Survey, the results of which were announced last month.

The survey found that one in three organisations (36 per cent) experienced economic crime in the last two years, with cybercrime affecting almost a third (32 per cent), the highest ever level in the survey’s history.

Guest speaker will be Mark Anderson, partner, forensic services at PwC UK.

Mark is part of the survey leadership team and will share his insight on the three critical areas identified in the survey relating to economic crime: cybercrime, ethics and compliance, and anti-money laundering.

Alison Cregeen, forensics senior manager with PwC Isle of Man, said: ‘We are delighted to have Mark with us for the seminar. Mark’s first-hand knowledge of the survey combined with more than 14 years’ experience in forensic services within Big4 and ‘‘boutique’’ investigations firms, will make for an interesting insight into economic crime and how local companies can protect vulnerable areas of their business.

‘Fraud remains a very real problem on the Isle of Man as it is elsewhere. The last 12 months has seen a marked increase in the number, level of sophistication and success rate of cyber attacks.

‘Many companies do not adequately understand the evolving risks they face or do not have an appropriate fraud/cyber incident response plan in place.’

The event will be followed by a panel session, with a selection of local industry professionals, with wine and canapés to follow for a 7pm finish.
