A car made in Peel has sold for US$176,000 (approximately £120,000) at an auction in America.
The rare micro-car P50 three-wheeler was manufactured in 1964 and went under the hammer at RM Sotheby’s in Florida on Saturday.
Bidding was described as ‘hotly contested’ by Amy Christie from the auction house. She told the BBC: ‘It was the final lot of the day and drove onto the stage to great applause from the audience.
‘It eventually sold for a remarkable $176,000 against a pre-sale estimate of between $75,000 and $100,000.
‘This represents a world record price for a Peel P50 sold at auction.’
The P50 was designed and built by Cyril Cannell and Henry Kissack. It has three wheels, one headlight, three gears and no reverse. It is 53 inches long and 39 inches wide and weighs 132lbs.
Only 47 original examples of the Peel P50 were made; 26 are known to exist today.
Former Top Gear presenter and ex-Isle of Man resident Jeremy Clarkson was among a string of celebrities to have tried out the iconic car.
