Douglas Borough Council is highlighting the importance of taking out contents insurance after a number of its social housing tenants reported damage caused to their personal belongings following minor household fires.
Councillor David Ashford said: ‘The council is responsible for buildings insurance but as part of their tenancy agreement it is the tenant’s responsibility to insure their contents.
‘This we set out in the information pack issued to new tenants, and our housing officers take every opportunity to emphasise the importance of safeguarding the family home.’
