Isle of Man was not invited to join EU referendum

The Manx government has denied that the Crown Dependencies had been asked to join the EU referendum but turned down the offer.

That claim was made by a campaign group which is calling for Manx and Channel Island residents to be given a vote in the referendum which will take place on June 23.

The campaign is being led by Lord of the Rings actor John Rhys-Davies who believes it is not too late for the Crown Dependencies to be given a say.

His team is preparing a petition to the Queen in Privy Council and looking to appeal to the European Court.

But his petition has so far secured only just over 1,100 names.

In a statement, the campaign group said: ‘It has also come to our attention that the Crown Dependencies were given the offer to join the referendum, but the three Chief Ministers decided that they did not wish to be involved.’

But a Manx government spokesman said: ‘We are not aware of any such offer.’

Chief Minister Allan Bell confirmed that the Crown Dependencies had not asked to join the referendum.

He pointed out that the Isle of Man is not part of the UK and not part of the EU so we have no automatic right to participate in a referendum in another country.

Mr Bell said it was important that Westminster bears in mind the needs of the Crown Dependencies and we don’t become ‘collateral damage’ in any vote for ‘Brexit’.
